Diane Newlander was first
introduced to swing dancing the old-fashioned way --
her dad taught her in her early teens. By the early nineties, Diane was a member of
Stepping Out
Dance Studio's performance and competition swing dance team in New York City.
For
two years Diane served as artistic director and choreographer
for the "Radio Flyers" performing dance troupe. the "Radio
Flyers" have performed twice as part
of productions for the Cunneen Hackett Cultural Center in Poughkeepsie, and were a
favorite at
local swing dances. They have also performed at town fairs for Rosendale,
Highland, and Ellenville.
Diane began teaching in the Hudson Valley in October 1998. She frequently teaches
the
before-the-dance beginner lesson for the Hudson Valley Community Dance's monthly swing
dances in Poughkeepsie.
Diane has also hosted swing dance classes at local institutions including: West Point
Military Academy,
Marist College, the Millbrook School, Ulster BOCES, All Sport, Unison Learning Center,
Ulster
County Community College, and the Hotchkiss School.
"Teaching Swing is the most joyful, rewarding career I could imagine. From the
young people who have never danced as a couple, to the "two-left-footers," everyone
walks out of class dancing and, most important, smiling." Diane Newlander.
