BODIES:
THE EXHIBITION
What Lies Beneath
Please
accept my apology for the lateness of this month's newsletter,
but I knew I was going to see BODIES: THE EXHIBITION today
and had a sneaking suspicion I would want to tell you about it.
For those of you who may not have heard about it, BODIES:
THE EXHIBITION is on display at New York City's South Street
Seaport as well as in four other locations between London and
Las Vegas, and is well worth the trip! I would encourage all health
care providers and anyone interested in knowing what lies beneath
their skin to check it out.
Real
anatomical specimens have undergone a process that involved replacing
the water in the bodies with a special polymer that, in effect,
rubberized the tissue. The end result is a spectacular display
of bodies that can be viewed without deterioration. The specimens
have been arranged in such a way that highlights certain aspects
of the human form. What muscles do I use when making a free-throw?
What muscles are involved in throwing a strike? How does my brain
have anything to do with the rest of my body? How does a healthy
lung look next to one that has been ravaged by pollutants and
cancer? What does my circulatory system look like? The answers
are certainly intriguing and visually stunning.

In addition
to the museum-like (please don't touch) displays, there was a
small interactive area at the end of the exhibit where there was
a liver, a tibia, one and a half brains and a quadriceps muscle
(I couldn't tell which one because it was just a small section
of one of them). These tissues were available for everyone to
touch and to hold and to marvel at. I was told by the attendant
that the polymer weighs more than the water that it replaced,
so these objects were slightly heavier than they would be in a
living body. If you've never held a brain in your hands, or a
liver, or a muscle fiber,... let me tell you that it was an awe
inspiring experience.
As I wondered
at the museum and interactive exhibits, I silently thanked the
people who had donated their bodies to science so that we may
learn from them - what
a gift!
