30th ANNUAL GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT
Now is a great time to quit smoking and Massage Therapy can help!

Thursday, November 16, 2006 marks the 30th annual Great American Smokeout, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. It is an opportunity for smokers to begin to take back their lives by putting down cigarettes for a day or for a lifetime.

All through November, receive a free Livefree.Smokefree. wristband when you visit Bodymind Massage Therapy and receive bodywork as a way to help you deal with kicking the habit. It serves a great reminder to you that you've made a committment to yourself - to your health - every time you look at it, just like tying a string around your finger.

How can Massage help you quit smoking? The following are some suggestions from the American Cancer Society of how to do it as well as some editorial comments about how massage can fit in to your smoking cessation plan:

  • Avoid people and places where you are tempted to smoke. Later on you will be able to handle these with more confidence.
    • You can feel comfort in knowing that there is no smoking allowed at Bodymind Massage Therapy. Have a seat, turn on the foot massager machine, inhale some soothing aromatherapy scents, and stay a while!
  • Alter your habits. Switch to juices or water instead of alcohol or coffee. Take a different route to work. Take a brisk walk instead of a coffee break.
    • I always recommend (and make available) drinking water to my clients after a massage to help flush their systems of metabolic wastes. It is especially important for you as a new non-smoker to stay hydrated.
  • Activities. Do something to decrease you stress. Exercise or do hobbies that keep your hands busy – such as needlework or woodworking – that can help distract you from the urge to use tobacco. Take a hot bath, exercise, or read a book.
    • Did I hear "stress reduction"? Yep - massage can REALLY help you with that! What's more relaxing that a massage session? I can't think of a single thing.
  • Deep breathing. When you were smoking, you breathed deeply as you inhaled the smoke. When the urge strikes now, breathe deeply and picture your lungs filling with fresh, clean air. Remind yourself of your reasons for quitting and the benefits you'll gain as an ex-smoker.
    • Massage Therapy can help relax the diaphragm and the muscles and connective tissue around the ribs, thereby encouraging deep breathing.
  • Delay. If you feel that you are about to light up or chew, delay. Tell yourself you must wait at least 10 minutes. Often this simple trick will allow you to move beyond the strong urge to use tobacco.
    • Whether its 30 minutes or an hour and a half, you can use your massage session as a delay tactic.
