Unitarian Universalist Church in Middletown, NY

Programs and Activities

Religious Education is offered during services; childcare is available, though babies and children of all ages are also welcome at the service if they prefer not to leave their parents which is often the case for the littlest ones. Services can also be heard via a speaker in the parish house, for parents and children who would like to step away from the sanctuary.  We offer a coming-of-age program culminating in a special recognition service for the graduates.  Our RE classes are varied; last year the group created and performed an original play for the congregation involving historical Unitarian-Universalists and their work to protect human rights; this year the group prepared a panel discussion for the congregation on Hate Crime Legislation.

Social Period: beverages, snacks and the warmth of friends is shared after services.

o       Potluck Lunches: the last Sunday of every month is a potluck luncheon.  Bring a dish to share, or if you are unable to bring something, there is usually plenty to spare.

o       Newsletter: we print a seasonal newsletter filled with information of interest on social justice activities, legislation and other items of interest, and news about church activities.

o       Bell Choir: For special occasions including Christmas Eve Candlelight Service and Easter Sunday, our handbell choir performs.  There is also a children’s handbell choir.  New participants are welcomed; no previous musical experience is required and instruction is provided.

o       Social Justice and Community Involvement:

1.   Clubhouse:  in the basement of the Church we have a program that is intended for people who have been involved in the mental health system.  Occasionally the congregation and Clubhouse host game nights or afternoons, where the Clubhouse’s fine facilities are shared by all.

2.   Food Pantry: The last Sunday of every month, UU Middletown donates food items for the local food pantry.

3.   Other Social Justice Programs: UU Middletown members are involved in various other social justice programs and participate in activities such Cropwalk.  The opportunities are many and will vary depending on the interests and energies of the members.

4.   Parenting Workshops: the church has hosted a series of supportive, informational workshops to share parenting tips and tools for parenting various age groups of children. These are not restricted to the church, but are open to the entire community.

A variety of other programs, including adult religious education classes for new members, family game nights, and special meals are held throughout the year. Work parties, where we accomplish special tasks around the church property, are also a source of fun as well as achievement.
